Bangalore University to have crèche soon

Varsity staff need not worry about children while at work

Bangalore: Teaching and non-teaching staff of Bangalore University need not worry about their children while they are at work.

The Department of Women’s Studies of the university will soon set up a crèche on the Jnana Bharathi campus.

K.K. Seethamma, Director of the department, told The Hindu said that the crèche would be inaugurated on March 8, the International Women’s Day. She said that everything was ready right from the building to toys, books and furniture.

She said that the department had submitted a proposal to set up the crèche as an extension facility three years ago.

“The University Grants Commission (UGC) approved the proposal and sanctioned Rs. 2 lakh. The project did not take off for want of space. The money is still with the university,” she said.

Prof. Seethamma said that the department submitted a fresh proposal to the UGC six months ago. “Vice-Chancellor H.A. Ranganath helped us move the proposal.

“He even gave us the professors’ quarters on the campus to set up the crèche. The UGC has now granted Rs. 3 lakh for one year. We have already purchased furniture,” she added.

The department has also advertised for three posts — a teacher, a peon, and a helper.

She said that Rs. 1.2 lakh will go towards their salaries. “We have no concrete plans as of now. We hope to take in 25 children aged between one and five. Apart from children of the university staff, we hope to attract children living in and around the university campus,” she said.

Prof. Ranganath said that it was for the first time that the university was setting up a crèche.

“The department had made attempts earlier. But now, things are falling in place. There are certain issues that need to be worked out though,” he said.

He said that after ascertaining the response to the set-up, the university and the department would decide whether the services of the crèche should be free or be given at a subsidised rate.

“We first want to publicise the concept. Many working parents send their children to crèches elsewhere and pay heavily.

“This is why we are publicising the crèche, as it is an extension activity of the department,” he said.
