Rizwanur committed suicide: CBI

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The death of Rizwanur Rahman, a 30-year-old computer graphics teacher, whose body was found by the side of the railway tracks near here on September 21, 2007, was a case of suicide, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has concluded in its findings, a part of which was made public in the Calcutta High Court on Thursday.

The CBI has charged Rahman’s father-in-law and influential city businessman, Ashok Todi, with abetment of suicide, criminal intimidation and conspiracy in connection with the death. The same charges have been levelled against Mr. Todi’s brother, three police officers including Ajoy Kumar, a senior IPS officer, and two others.

The agency has also recommended that the government initiate appropriate disciplinary action against the then Commissioner of Police, Prasun Mukherjee, as well as departmental disciplinary major penal action against another IPS officer, Gyanwant Singh, and two officers of a local thana.

Justice Dipankar Dutta read out that part of the report pertaining to the CBI’s charges. Hearing on the case will be taken up on March 12.

The High Court had directed the CBI to investigate Rahman’s death and events leading to it shortly after the incident. Investigations began on October 20, 2007. Its findings were submitted to the High Court on January 8.

The State’s Home Secretary, Prasad Ranjan Ray, said the State will comply with any order that the High Court may give pertaining to the CBI’s recommendations.

Rahman’s death had resulted in a public outcry and the transfer of five police officers including Mr. Mukherjee, suspected to have been involved in the events leading to it.
