Court stays extension of gag order against Raj Thackeray

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: A sessions court here on Thursday stayed the extension of police order that forbid Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader Raj Thackeray from holding public meetings or coming out with press statements.

But Additional Sessions Judge S. N. Sardesai gave the police time to appeal to the High Court against the order, stating that the stay would be effective from 5 p.m. on Friday. Mr. Thackeray had filed a revision application against the court’s earlier order that allowed the extension of the ban.

The court, while upholding the gag order, had ruled that the police could extend the order but it could not be indefinite.

The police had restrained Mr. Thackeray from making public statements in the wake of recent disturbances in Mumbai that had led to his arrest.
