“Regular intake of leafy vegetables prevents anaemia”

MADURAI: Regular intake of leafy vegetables and fruits with milk and meat was essential to prevent anaemia, said experts at a continuing medical education programme on ‘Blood diseases and stem cell transplant’ at the Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre here on Sunday.

The topic of discussion was stem cell transplant to treat blood cancer and other blood disorders. K. Krishnarathinam, haematologist, Sri Ramachandra Medical College, Chennai, suggested that stem cells from umbilical cord could be used for bone marrow transplant as an effective method in the treatment of blood cancer.

Experts were of the view that periodical medical check-up, especially in the case of women, would go a long way in early detection and treatment of blood diseases.

They also advised that prolonged fever, cough or bleeding from any site in the body should be immediately addressed to through simple blood test. More than 100 doctors participated in the CME.
