CPI (M) congress in Coimbatore from March 29 to April 3

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The 19th congress of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) will meet in Coimbatore from March 29 to April 3. About 800 party delegates from all over the country will participate.

Talking to newsmen here on Thursday, reception committee chairman R. Umanath said this was the third time that the party’s highest forum was meeting in Tamil Nadu. The party’s 9th congress was held in Madurai in 1972 and the 14th in Chennai in 1992.

The draft resolutions adopted by the party had already been circulated to party units throughout the country. Party members at local units had a role in evolving policies as any amendments proposed by them would be discussed at the congress.

Seminars planned

In connection with the all-India meet, seminars on various important topics would be organised in Chennai, Madurai, Tirupur, Tuticorin and Nagapattinam. Eminent scholars and party leaders would participate.

The death anniversary of E.M.S. Namboodiripad, which falls on March 19, would be observed as ‘flag day.’ Red day flags would be hoisted throughout the State and Puducherry. As part of the campaign cultural troupes would perform programmes for over a week starting from March 5 all over the State. About 40 to 50 foreign delegates from 34 communist and workers parties have been invited for the meet. Mr. Umanath said the party was firm in opposing the India-U.S. nuclear deal.

Party’s State secretary N. Varadarajan, who is also the reception committee secretary, said the party, in association with the State unit of the Communist Party of India, had been organising joint agitations in the State on people’s issues.
