Delimitation to be questioned in court

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Muslim Council, a recently formed “non political forum for the welfare of the community,” has decided to question the scientific basis of the recently concluded delimitation process of the Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies in the country.

The head of the council and the former Union Minister C.M. Ibrahim told presspersons here on Friday that the council would urge the Supreme Court to consider the pros and cons of holding elections to the State Assembly in the light of reported confusion over the voters list and the alleged manipulations of voters’ identity cards by the vested interests.

Asserting that the very delimitation process had betrayed logic and reasoning, Mr. Ibrahim asked where was the need for 27 MLAs for Bangalore city alone when bodies such as Bangalore Development Authority, Bangalore Mahanagara Palike and the State Secretariat had been active in the city?

On the contrary, Assembly constituencies had been spread over in rural areas that lacked infrastructure and administrative apathy, Mr. Ibrahim said. The basic question whether the delimitation process was exercised on population or area should be clarified, he added.
