This Day That Age
The Food and Agriculture Organisation’s Rice Committee warned on February 26 that there probably would be less rice available for export to the world in 1958 than there was in the two preceding years. In a report made at the conclusion of a ten-day meeting in Washington, the Committee reported that the 1957-58 harvested crops in some of the main exporting countries were “significantly lower”, while the carryover from previous harvests had been reduced to “very low level." The Committee said the reduction in supplies was marked for the lower grades than for the expensive grades.
