SINGAPORE: In a gesture of goodwill towards India, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, during his inauguration as the chief executive this week, has hosted the former President, Abdul Kalam, as a special invitee. Several months before becoming a presidential candidate, Mr. Lee had travelled to India and called on Mr. Kalam, President then, to know more about his initiative for “a World Knowledge Platform” that could bring together universities with “core competencies” in different spheres. It was in this context that Mr. Lee, who is now planning to set up an international science-technology-business entity that might be modelled on Mr. Kalam’s idea of a “World Knowledge Platform,” invited him as a “personal guest” for the inauguration in Seoul. While Mr. Kalam was given a pride of place at the function, the government was formally represented by Ambassador N. Parthasarathi.
