Corrections and clarifications

* * In a KBK infographic “Railway budget at a glance” (“Business” page, February 28, 2008), a bar chart depicting the overall position of excess showed Rs.11,786 crore (BE for 2008-09) to be higher/taller than Rs.13,534.08 crore (RE for 2007-08). The figures mentioned in the graphic are right. It was a design error.

* * A heading of a report “Mirpur sabha to build rest house in Pakistan occupied Kashmir” (Early editions, February 29, 2008) was incorrect. The report was about the initiative of Hindu refugees from Mirpur in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) now settled on the Indian side of Jammu and Kashmir. The rest house is to be built on the Indian side of the State by the Mirpur Sabha, and not in Mirpur PoK. The error crept in while editing. (Hindu refugees are to build a rest house for Muslims who come to meet their relatives.)

* * Is it Madhesi or Madeshi? A heading of a report (February 28, 2008, page 1) said “Koirala authorised to sign deal with Madhesis” while the first paragraph was “Nepal’s Seven Party Alliance on Wednesday authorised Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala to strike a deal with the agitating ethnic Indian Madeshi groups to end the strike in [the] Terai.” It is Madhesi. (Madhesi is the collective identity of a people of southern Nepal and they are ethnically and culturally close to the people of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.)

* * A standalone AP photograph “Artificial anatomy” (“Science & Technology” page, February 28, 2008) was captioned “Teaching Aid: German Professor Gunther von Hagens stands next to one of the anatomical specimens entitled ‘The Wave Roller’ at the launch of his latest exhibition, BODY WORLDS 4, at The Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester, England, February 21. He has developed a preservation technique called ‘plastination’ to teach people about human skeletal and cardiovascular systems and the treatment of diseases.” Prof. Gunther von Hagen’s specimens are real human cadavers (mainly procured through voluntary donations). The specimens are subjected to extraction of all bodily fluids and soluble fat to stop decomposition, and replaced through vacuum-forced impregnation with reactive resins and elastomers, such as silicon rubber and epoxy that harden with gas, light, or heat curing, giving the specimens rigidity and permanence.

* * The Guardian, in its “Corrections and Clarifications” column (February 28, 2008), says: “In the article ‘Turkey strives for 21st century form of Islam’, page 17, February 27, 2008, ‘Fadi Hakura is a Turkey expert at Chatham House, not the International Institute of Strategic Studies’”. The article was republished in The Hindu (Op-Ed page, February 28, 2008) with the heading “Turkey move to rewrite basis of sharia law”.

* * A promo (Chennai, February 27, 2008) titled “Awards presented – page 16”, showed President Pratibha Patil with Ambika Soni, Minister for Tourism and Culture. There was no such report on the page specified. The report appeared in the early editions with the heading “Use art, music to promote social causes: President”. She had said, “Indian art and music could be used as effective tools to convey socially relevant messages, while presenting the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship and Akademi Awards for 2007 to 33 eminent persons at the Vigyan Bhawan, Delhi on February 26, 2008.”
