MOSCOW: On the last day of Russia’s presidential election campaign, President Vladimir Putin appealed to voters to come to the polls on Sunday and vote “for the future of Russia”. Mr. Putin is not running, having served two straight four-year terms — the maximum allowed by the Constitution. His favoured candidate Dmitry Medvedev looks set to sweep the election with over 70 per cent of the votes. Mr. Medvedev’s main rivals — Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov and ultra nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky are unlikely to gain more than 15 and 12 per cent respectively, and the third contestant, political newcomer Andrei Bogdanov, is expected to garner about one per cent.
