Rajasthan seeks Central funds for electrification of rural areas

Special Correspondent

Proposal worth Rs.16,000 crore sent to the Centre by State Government

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government has sent proposals worth Rs.16,000 crore to the Centre for electrification of all households in the State’s rural areas and will release power connections to all families living below poverty line (BPL) upon the Centre sanctioning the money. Minister of State for Energy Gajendra Singh told the State Assembly here on Thursday that an enormous expenditure was needed for creating a robust electricity infrastructure in the rural areas in view of the State’s difficult geography, while the Centre had so far sanctioned only Rs.1,091 crore.

Mr. Singh said the BJP-led Government had released electricity connections to 3.22 lakh BPL families during the last four years compared to 65,000 connections given by the previous Congress regime. Calling upon the opposition Congress members to exert pressure on the Central Government to release sufficient funds for the purpose, Mr. Singh said the Centre had already incorporated the State Government’s Kuteer Jyoti Yojana in the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification Mission for giving power connections to all rural households by 2012.

“However, the criterion laid down for providing basic facilities in the rural areas is impractical and unrealistic,” said Mr. Singh.
