Chaos at Chennai railway station

S.Vydhianathan and Krishna Velupillai

CHENNAI: There was chaos at the Chennai Central Railway Station on Thursday as train services were disrupted when an overhead equipment (OHE) snapped near the station yard. Railway officials here said that the OHE was damaged at the same point where it happened on Sunday last. The station was brimming with stranded commuters as the railway officials struggled to get the trains to move. However, authorities said that they could neither receive incoming trains nor allow outgoing trains from platforms one to five for several hours from around 11.30 a.m.

Trains delayed

As a result, the arrival of Pinakini Express from Vijayawada, Inter-City Express from Coimbatore, Darbanga-Bangalore Express, Chennai Express from Bangalore and Patna Express from Bangalore was delayed between 30 minutes and two and a half hours. Contributing to the most panic and chaos was the delay in the departure of Coromandel Express by over seven hours.

Passengers waited from 8.45 a.m, scheduled departure time, with little information about the reason for the delay. They complained that the authorities were not forthcoming with any information about the reason for the delay or when the train would be expected to leave.

Senior citizens J. Lindsay and R. Rajachandran, heading towards Kolkata for a pensioners’ conference, said that they had been severely inconvenienced by the delay and were also annoyed at the authorities for snapping at them for asking questions.

“How can they just expect us to sit and wait for so many hours without any intimation as to what was going on,” Mr. Lindsay asked.

Station authorities said that there had been a delay in arrival of its pairing train, the Howrah Mail, by some hours.
