Letters to the Editor
Hats off to Darul Uloom, Asia’s most revered seminary at Deoband, for holding a huge convention of about 6000 ulema (Islamic scholars) and passing a resolution condemning terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It has been welcomed by not only Muslims but all sections of society. It is the duty of responsible leaders to take right decisions. The Indian ulema have done it. There is no doubt that a true Muslim cannot and should not think of violence. Islam is a religion of peace, equality and brotherhood. V.M. Khaleelur Rahman, Ambur The resolution condemning all forms of terrorism is welcome. It is time for all Muslim scholars to come together and unanimously present the correct interpretation of Islamic teachings to our fellow countrymen and remove their misconceptions, created and nurtured by neo-conservative and fascist forces and a big section of the media, about Islam. Sameena Faheem Hashmi, Hyderabad The Deoband declaration is not only a strong message but also a good beginning. Muslims should set their face against terrorism by keeping themselves away from any weapons-based religious fight. This will not only send positive signals across the world but also lead to a paradigm shift in the worldview on terrorism. P. Senthil Saravana Durai, Vazhavallan The message from Deoband is loud and clear for those who indulge in any form of terrorism. The ulemas have greater responsibility in educating the misguided youth. Muslim scholars can play a significant role in removing the misconceptions about Muslims across the world. They should take untiring efforts to spread the message of peace and coexistence. V. Shujaath Ahmed, Chennai
