JAIPUR: The Postal Department and the Passport Office have tied up to facilitate online registration for passports from select post offices in all 32 districts of Rajasthan. The facility, which would cost the applicant an additional expense of only Rs.25, is expected to save people living in far-flung areas from having to come all the way to the Capital city of Jaipur, and reduce the huge crowds at the Passport Office here. According to Rajasthan Circle Post Master General S. Gauriar and Passport Officer S. K. Verma, each district has a minimum of one post office selected for the job while some of the districts with a larger number of passport applicants such as Jaipur, Ajmer and Sikar have more. A recordJaipur city has three post offices and the district another two selected under the category while Sikar has four.“In future we may stop collecting passport applications at the Passport Office,” said Mr. Verma, who notched up a record in issuing passports the previous year from Jaipur. The data on the passport applications from the post offices would be uploaded directly in the Passport Office computer, he said. The papers for police verification would be sent from the post offices. The applicant would be given a reference number for follow-up which could also be done through checking the website, http://passport.nic.in Interestingly, more than Jaipur, Sikar district accounted for the maximum number of 18,439 passport applications in 2007, followed by 14,984 from Jaipur.
