Bangalore: Examinations for Class XII students of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) syllabus begins on Saturday.

The examinations for Class X will begin from March 3. Students this year face a new pattern of question papers, with about 20 per cent of questions dedicated to testing students’ analytical skills rather than rote learning.

About 13.13 lakh students, including 5.45 lakh girls, will appear for the CBSE examinations this year, marking an increase of more than 8 per cent from last year.

According to Nagaraju N., Regional Officer of CBSE, Chennai, the number of students appearing from Karnataka stands at 11,587 for Class X and 4,473 for Class XII. They will be taking examinations at 82 centres.

Additional time

Like last year, students will get an additional 15 minutes so that there is sufficient time to read the questions carefully.

While there was some apprehensions among students and parents about the changed pattern, schoolteachers seem confident that would be no problem.

Maithreyi Satyadev, principal of Sindhi High School, Kumara Krupa branch, said that they were intimated about the changes in advance and it was integrated into the textbooks.

The teachers, she added, had been training students to work on sample question papers.

Mr. Nagaraju said that CBSE had been providing counselling to students to beat examination stress both online and through telephone.

ICSE exams

The Indian Council for Secondary Education (ICSE) examination for Class X students and the Indian School Certificate (ISC) examination for Class XII students began on Friday, with students appearing for English I paper.

Coordinating convenor of ICSE, Rani Rajkumar, said that 4,645 students from 85 schools at 47 centres appeared for the examinations in the Bangalore region.

Many students entered examination halls with some anxiety, but when they emerged came out, they were a relieved lot.

Some of them said that the paper was a “stress-buster” and had encouraged them to deal other subjects with self-assurance.

They said they were happy with the question paper format and about the gap given between papers.

“Today’s English I paper was easier than most of the pre-board exams we had at school,” said Devesh Ballal, a Class X student of Bishop Cotton Boys’ High School. Class XII student Kunal A. said: “All my classmates completed the paper without too much trouble in any part of the paper.”

Abigail Yuk Ling Ho, Class XII student of St. John’s High School, said that the preliminary and revision tests conducted at the school were tougher than the board exams.

Hazel, English teacher at Baldwin Girls’ High School, was confident that all her students would score above 90 as the revision classes and tests conducted at school had boosted the confidence of students.

Chaitanya L.S., a Class X student, said that there was no change in the format of the English paper.

Except for the Geography paper, where some change in format was announced by his teachers, the other exams are expected to be in the same format as the previous years.
