TIRUCHI: Libraries significantly complement classroom learning for knowledge acquisition, Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu said on Friday.

He was speaking after laying the foundation for the District Central Library building and inaugurating new library buildings during the conference on restructuring of libraries organised by the Directorate of General Libraries.

Mr. Thennarasu emphasised that libraries that are vital for creation of a knowledge society should be nurtured well, referring to the Government’s decision to start a world-class library in Chennai at a cost of Rs. 100 crore.

The village libraries in the State were poised for a sequential growth with additional facilities and computerisation, he said, calling for the society’s support.

The Book Purchase Committee has bought books worth Rs. 17.5 crore for the libraries in the State during 2007-08. For libraries in the districts of Tiruchi, Pudukkottai, Karur and Perambalur, books worth Rs. 1.69 crore were provided. There was a let-up in purchase of books in the previous regime, he observed.

Appreciating donors of the four districts for making contributions of Rs. 3.37 crore in terms of cash, land, buildings and materials, Transport Minister K.N. Nehru felt that libraries in villages would not only lead to literacy but also harmony in the society.

Forests Minister N. Selvaraj spoke of the initiatives taken by the Government to strengthen the library movement.
