Livestock insurance scheme to be implemented

Special Correspondent

VELLORE: The Union government has decided to implement a livestock insurance scheme for farmers and livestock farmers in association with Oriental Insurance Company Limited and United India Insurance Company Limited. Funds for the scheme have been allotted under the Tenth Five Year Plan.

According to a release issued by the Collector of Vellore and the Joint Director of Animal Husbandry, the Centre would pay 50 per cent of the premium. The policyholders would pay the remaining. Farmers/livestock farmers may obtain the policy by submitting a health certificate issued by the nearest government dispensary, veterinary assistant surgeon or the ‘Aavin’ veterinary doctor, along with 50 per cent premium, to the insurance company. Further details about the scheme could be obtained from the nearest government veterinary dispensary.
