Loan waiver an eyewash: Jayalalithaa

Special Correspondent

S. Ramadoss and Jayalalithaa

CHENNAI: “It is a lacklustre budget and totally directionless. It has been prepared with an eye on the vote bank in view of the ensuing Lok Sabha elections,” said All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa here on Friday.

Terming the loan waiver for farmers an “eye wash,” Ms. Jayalalithaa said it was restricted to marginal and small farmers. For the rest, there would be a rebate of 25 per cent if they came forward for a one-time settlement. This was “quite unacceptable.”

“Getting loans difficult ”

Farmers will find it difficult to secure fresh loans from banks as there is no budgetary allocation for waiver of agriculture loans, she said.

She criticised the Finance Minister for reducing the allotment for the desalination plant in Chennai from his initial offer of Rs.1,000 crore to Rs.300 crore.

With regard to the spiralling of prices of essential commodities, no breakthrough had been made by the Finance Minister, she said.

The AIADMK leader said that it was hard to find constructive, new ideas in the budget and it did not provide any tangible benefit for the general public. It was clearly an anti-people budget, she added.

“People oriented”

Welcoming various provisions in the budget, Pattali Makkal Katchi leader S.Ramadoss said it had taken care of the overall development of the country, agriculture growth, price control and social justice.

Congratulating United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for their guidance in preparing the “people-oriented” budget, Dr. Ramadoss said though the government’s expenditure had increased substantially due to various concessions and relief, the overall budget deficit had been reduced. This showed effective financial management.

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam president Vijayakant welcomed the various concessions announced, though the budget was prepared with an eye on the Lok Sabha elections. The relief provided for farmers would be temporary as no permanent measures had been proposed, he said.
