CHENNAI: Visual communications students of Madras Christian College (MCC) have two days of legitimate film-watching, thanks to the State-level film festival organised by them.

Inaugurated by director Thankar Bachaan here on Wednesday, ‘Center stage 2008’- the two-day film festival showcases documentaries, short films and ad films by students of media from different colleges in the State and also those of noted film-makers. Interestingly, interactive sessions with young film-makers have also been organised as part of the event. Speaking at the inaugural, Mr. Bachaan said being sensitive to the lives led by lower sections of society was very important for a film-maker.

“Merely learning from books does not amount to education. Observe people around you, their lives, cultures, emotions… you will learn a lot,” he told students.

Preserving one’s language was very important, he said, adding that more people were comfortable in Tamil and English together, rather than one of them correctly. “This only goes to show that these people neither know Tamil nor English well enough,” he said.

Urging students to make films that touched hearts instead of those that merely fetched income, he said: “Remember who is watching your film. You should be able to relate to them instantly,” he said. Answering queries of students in the interactive session, he said not too any good films came out. It was up to aspiring directors to save the industry by making meaningful films, he said.

A screening of a short film made by MCC students followed the inaugural.
