Kochi: The Malayalam film industry is debating whether films should be exhibited in maximum centres in the first week of the release. A growing trend in Bollywood and other film industries, the producers and distributors say, the move would help in reaping good profits in the initial days itself. It would also help in checking piracy, they feel. According to the distributors, pirated CDs enter the market one or two weeks after the release of a movie. By releasing a movie in maximum centres, the distributors expect that the audience turnout will be higher. This would eventually help in increasing the counter collections for a film. But the Kerala Film Exhibitors Federation is not ready to embrace these proposals. They are opposing the move saying that the collections in lead centres would suffer if a movie is released simultaneously in ‘B’ and ‘C’ centres. The Kerala Cine Exhibitors Association, association of non-releasing centres, had earlier decided not to facilitate the shifting of films in protest against the stance taken by the Film Exhibitors Federation. The Film Chamber of Commerce has decided to convene a meeting of stakeholders in the film industry on March 5 and 6.
