‘Bridal’ snake rescued from residential locality
P. Oppili
CHENNAI: Officials of the wildlife wing of the Forest Department, on Thursday, rescued a ‘Bridal’ snake from a residential locality in Tiruvottiyur.
The officials said they received a call from the residents regarding the snake, and when they went to rescue the reptile they were surprised to see a species that was quite uncommon until recently, they added.
The 15 mm non-poisonous snake with a smooth scale, black back and creamish-white band is a nocturnal one. A good climber, the ‘Bridal’ snake would hide its head under its coiled body when disturbed, say records.
Noted herpetologist Romulus Whitaker said that 30 years ago the ‘Bridal’ snakes were rare in Chennai.
Talking about the relocation of reptiles, Mr. Whitaker said the authorities should release the reptile within a few hundred metres from where it was rescued. Otherwise, chances are that a venomous snake could occupy the space of the removed ‘Bridal’ snake, he said.
People think any snake with a band is poisonous and they get panicky, Mr. Whitaker said.
