The highway was sanctioned in 1997 It will reduce Kozhikode-Ponnani distance by 35 km MALAPPURAM: The district panchayat has demanded that the government rev up work on the coastal highway passing through Malappuram and Kozhikode districts. A resolution moved by opposition leader V.V. Gopinath on Saturday pointed out that the upcoming coastal highway would be a dream come true for thousands of people living on the coasts in the two districts. Land acquiredThe coastal highway, beginning from Vengalam in Kozhikode district and extending up to Ponnani in Malappuram, was sanctioned in 1997 and work started soon. Much of the land for the highway was also acquired. The highway will reduce the distance between Kozhikode and Ponnani by 35 km. The resolution sought the help of the State and Central governments to speed up the work on the highway. The district panchayat protested against the exclusion of Arabic arts festival from the category which would get grace marks in SSLC examinations for winning in the State school youth festival. District panchayat president Arimbra Mohammed presided over the meeting. Vice-president P.K. Kunhu, standing committee chairmen Salim Kuruvambalam and Ummer Arakkal, and district panchayat secretary K. Vijayan addressed the meeting.
