Protest by rural job scheme beneficiaries enters fifth day

Staff Correspondent

Probe sought into ‘irregularities’ in implementation

Seeking action: Members of the Janapara Sanghatanegala Janti Kriya Samiti staging a protest in Raichur.

Raichur: The indefinite protest by the beneficiaries of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), under the banner Janapara Sanghatanegala Janti Kriya Samiti, entered fifth day here on Saturday.

Nearly 50 members of the samiti are staging the protest in front of the zilla panchayat office since February 26. Five of its members — J.B. Raja, Abhaya, Chandramma, Akkamahadevi Patil and Dyamavva — are on hunger strike.

Ms. Patil was shifted to the Government Civil Hospital on Saturday after her condition became serious. However, doctors said that her condition was stable. The activists are demanding to the Government to issue job cards and passbooks to all the registered beneficiaries under the scheme, release unemployment allowance to the jobless beneficiaries, provide compensation to the beneficiaries for delay in releasing their wages and appoint necessary staff at the zilla, taluk and gram panchayats for effective implementation of the scheme. They are also demanding the Government to investigate into the alleged irregularities in the implementation of the scheme, initiate action against all erring officials and suspend Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat Anees Siraj for his alleged lapses in the implementation of the scheme and encouraging corruption among the implementing officials.

Ambanna Aroli, convener of the samiti, said the lack of administration at the zilla panchayat had affected the proper implementation of the scheme.
