Gandhiraj are in the picture. — PUDUCHERRY: Justice S. Rajeswaran of the Madras High Court on Saturday stressed the need for constructive coordination between the Bench and Bar for effective functioning of the judiciary. Speaking on the ‘Role of lawyers in the 21st century,’ he said, “Constructive and meaningful coordination” between the Bar and Bench was important in delivering justice to litigants. Terming the profession of lawyers and judicial officers as one of “a noble cause,” he said all those involved in the practice of jurisprudence should take their career as a service to humanity. “No other profession is so much acclaimed in the past as that of lawyers. But of late, certain acts of a few professionals has brought disrepute to the judiciary,” Mr. Justice Rajeswaran said. Citing a recent survey by an organisation which put a lawyer’s profession down the ladder, he said it was disturbing to note that a career in law was no more considered as a prestige. He appealed to students of law and junior lawyers to have patience and put more time into practice with a senior advocate. “The fading role of senior advocates in shaping juniors is a disturbing and dangerous trend,” he said. The lecture was organised by Advocate R. Padmanabhan Memorial Charitable Trust. He also distributed law books to junior lawyers of Puducherry Bar and scholarships to law students of Ambedkar Government College in Puducherry. Chief Judge D. Krishnaraja presided.
