PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Saturday held discussions with Inspector-General S.P.S Basra, Regional Commander, Coast Guard (Eastern Region), on the maritime agency’s plans to expand its base in the Union Territory. Mr. Basra, who was on his maiden visit to the Coast Guard Station in Puducherry, called on Mr. Rangasamy at the Assembly and briefed him about their plans to have air operations from the airport here. He appealed to the Chief Minister to allocate three acres of land inside the Puducherry Airport for setting up aircraft maintenance hangar. He told Mr. Rangasamy that the Coast Guard planned to shift some of its air operations from Chennai to Puducherry and for that it need to have a hangar and space for establishing an office for giving logistic support. Mr. Basra also requested Mr. Rangasamy to allocate adequate space at the proposed port in Karaikal for creating a jetty to berth Coast Guard ships. The Coast Guard wanted to have 100 metres inside the port to construct the jetty, sources in the government said. Mr. Basra also called on Director-General of Police A.S. Khan at the police headquarters. Immediately after his arrival here on Friday, Mr. Basra held a meeting with Chief Secretary Rakesh Behari.
