Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding with private firms for developing oil palm in six districts.
Commissioner of Agriculture S. Kosalaraman signed the MoU with five private companies for oil palm development programmes in Cuddalore, Villupuram, Vellore, Theni, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts. Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugham and Agriculture Secretary Surjit K. Chanudhary were present.
According to an official release, the companies, in coordination with oil palm growers in their areas, would develop clusters of not less than 100 hectares within a radius of two km. They would also set up an oil palm extraction unit with a crushing capacity of 2.5 tonne per hour within three years.
The programme is already being implemented in Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts.
