“Loan waiver does not address primary issue”
Staff Reporter
KOCHI: Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said here on Saturday that the fundamental problem faced by the farming community has not been addressed by the Union government’s loan waiver scheme. The farmers were facing erosion in the prices of farm produce; a result of the arrival of foreign consignments following reduction in import duty.
The Chief Minister said that debt relief would only be a temporary solution. In fact, the State government had initiated loan waiver and had been awaiting Central clearance prior to the announcement of the Central scheme, he said. The suicide rate in the State had rapidly decreased, he said.
