ISLAMABAD: The much-awaited notification of the results of Pakistan’s February 18 national election came on Saturday, and all eyes are now on President Pervez Musharraf for the convening of the newly elected National Assembly. Election Commission Secretary Kanwar Dilshad announced the notification of members of the National Assembly and members of the four provincial Assemblies at a late press conference. The Election Commission will now begin distributing 60 reserved seats for women and 10 seats reserved seats for minorities among the various political parties on the basis of their performance in the elections. Also, independent candidates get three days to join a political party. “We should complete the entire process by March 5,” said Mr Dilshad. It is expected that retired General Musharraf will convene Parliament within a reasonable period of time thereafter. The Constitution sets no time limit for the President to do so, and in 2002, General Musharraf delayed it for as long as it took to put together the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) coalition.
