Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: D. P. Maheshwari, President, United Planters’ Association of Southern India (UPASI), expressed his happiness in the announcements made by the Finance Minister in his budget speech. He welcomed the allocations made for the replantation and rejuvenation scheme for tea, coffee, rubber and cardamom to the extent of Rs. 40 crore, Rs. 18 crore, Rs. 19.41 crore and Rs. 10.60 crore, respectively.

Though the allocations have been made for the implementation as and when the replantation and rejuvenation schemes are approved by the Cabinet with respect to coffee, rubber and cardamom, Mr. Maheshwari said that the Government should not make any restrictive provisions for the growers with higher holdings.

Mr. Maheshwari also welcomed the decision to withdraw the cash withdrawal tax from April 1, 2009, and also reduction in Central Sales Tax to 2 per cent from 3 per cent.
