Alappuzha to be declared fully electrified town

ALAPPUZHA: Electricity Minister A.K. Balan will declare Alappuzha as a completely electrified town here on March 15. Alappuzha will thus become the second region in the State after Irinjalakuda to be declared so, K.C. Venugopal, MLA, said in a statement here on Saturday.

A function will be held at the Kerala State Electricity Board’s (KSEB) Vidyuthi Bhavan near the Cemetery Bridge here. A high-level meeting held here on Saturday discussed the final touches to be given to the preparations prior to the declaration, Mr. Venugopal said, adding that the procedures to ensure total electrification of the town were nearing completion.

Campaign

During the campaign to achieve the rare distinction, 2,627 households were given power connections, out of which 266 were overhead connections and 2,361 were weather-proof connections.

Nearly 350 families which did not have pattas or were living on ‘puramboke’ land were also given connections. Rs.1.40 crore, including Rs.25 lakh drawn from the MLA’s funds, and from tsunami funds and BPL scheme funds, were utilised to ensure that every household in the town had access to electricity, he said.

Municipal Chairman P.P. Chittaranjan and KSEB officials were present for the meeting. It had earlier been announced that the declaration would be made on February 29, but the same was postponed due to various reasons.
