Financial approval for irrigation plan

SORAB: The former MLA S. Kumar Bangarappa said on Friday that financial approval had been given for diversion of water from the Dandavati river through a canal system for irrigation in Sorab taluk and a survey on the project it was under way.

He was speaking at a meeting convened to review the progress under the project, which is part of the Vidarbha Package.

Stating that it was his ambitious project prepared when he was the Minister of State for Minor Irrigation, he said that Rs. 14 crore had been allocated for the purpose. The survey work on the feasibility of the project would be completed in a few days.

He said the proposed project envisaged irrigating land in Janginakoppa and surrounding areas near Sorab. The project was considered as an alternative to the previous one which would have resulted in submersion of a vast area.

He appealed to political parties not to politicise the project. A sum of Rs. 39 crore had been sanctioned to Sorab taluk under the Vidarbha Package. Various works had been taken up and part of the fund had been utilised for construction of 17 barrages and development of six tanks, he said.

He said the work on the Muguru barrage was in the final stage. The work on the proposed Moodi Lift Irrigation Scheme would be taken up soon, he added.

The president of Sorab Taluk Congress Committee, H.C. Patil, presided over the meeting.
