DAVANGERE: H.J. Thembad, Regional Transport Officer, said that road tax amounting to Rs.12 lakh is due from new vehicles and Rs.13 lakh from old vehicles. Mr. Thembad instructed the owners of the vehicles to pay the tax lest the motor vehicle inspectors seized their vehicles. In a statement issued here on Saturday, Mr. Thembad said that apart from this, an amount of Rs. 7 lakh was due from non-transport vehicles. He said that motor vehicle inspectors had been asked to conduct an intensified checking drive in the district to catch people who had not paid the tax. Once the RTO seized a vehicle for non-payment of tax, the owner of the vehicle had to pay 20 per cent of the tax as penalty, along with the tax to get the vehicle released. Mr. Thembad said that if vehicles were stationed at one place , the owners could pay an amount of Rs.100 along with a declaration and get a tax rebate for their vehicles, he said.
