Lorry with wheat consignment seized

KASARAGOD: The Adhoor police seized a lorry with 108 quintals of wheat and detained its driver on the charge of transporting the food material from Payyannur to Mysore without requisite documents, at Mulleria on Friday night.

The police suspect that the wheat was part of a consignment meant to be distributed under the food-for-work programme in Kannur district and was being smuggled out of the State by black marketeers. The police made the seizure during vehicle checking. The wheat was stored in 216 sacks. The driver, M.M. Uthaman, a native of Keezhillam, Kannur, and D. Nagesh, cleaner from Kumbla, were arrested. They said the consignment was loaded at Payyannur and was bound for Mysore, according to the police.
