One medical college in each district: YSR

HYDERABAD: The State Government is taking steps to ensure one medical college each in all the districts.

The Government has decided to set up medical colleges in Adilabad, Kadapa, Srikakulam and Prakasam districts while it would encourage the managements of the private institutions if they come forward to set up medical colleges, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy said.

Intervening in the debate during the Question Hour in the Legislative Council on Tuesday,

Dr. Reddy said it was decided to set up a medical college in Erragadda in the State capital.

In addition to setting up medical colleges, the Government had decided to pay salaries on par with the private colleges to retain the staff.

Arogya Sri

The Government hospitals at Warangal, Kurnool and Guntur would be upgraded as super specialty hospitals on the lines of the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences while efforts were under way to develop the required infrastructure for strengthening the medicare facilities in other Government hospitals.

Steps were being taken to provide corporate medical services to poor through Rajiv Arogya Sri scheme that would be extended to all the districts by October 2, coinciding with Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday. Treatment for 250 ailments was being provided under Arogya Sri and 40 more diseases would be added to the list shortly while the Government had succeeded in its negotiations with private hospitals in bringing down treatment costs.

Replying to a query, Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah refuted charge that the contractor who was awarded works on Pulichintala project had altered the design to bring down the costs. The design of the project was finalised by the central design organisation and the work was not in deviation of the basic parameters.
