BHUBANESWAR: Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts, a body sponsored by Union Ministry of Textiles, has proposed to set up an integrated marketing project in Orissa for development and promotion of handicrafts and handlooms of the State. The project is likely to be implemented by a special purpose vehicle of the Council and other organisations with an investment of Rs. 100 crores. The details of the project were discussed when Director of the Council Rakesh Kumar along with senior officers met Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in New Delhi on Saturday. Various componentsAccording to an official release, the project will have various components such as human resource development, design and product development, national and international marketing, and establishment of a crafts complex at Bhubaneswar and Puri as well as setting up of showrooms abroad. The project will be an integrated one and executed in a phased manner. It will focus on tribal and fibre crafts that had not been harnessed properly despite availability of skilled manpower. The project is expected to create employment opportunity for more than three lakh families, the release said. The Chief Minister hoped that the project would give a boost to the development of handloom and handicraft sectors in the State and benefit a large number of weavers and artisan families.
