‘Women’s empowerment evident in several fields’

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A symposium on “Role of women in politics” was organised by the Women Welfare and Child Development Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi here over the weekend to mark the upcoming International Women’s Day on March 8. Addressing the gathering, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sushma Swaraj said there were several ways to empower women, but they were all an end in themselves.

“In the 60 years since the country acquired Independence, women empowerment has been evidenced in various fields. Now women are holding senior posts in almost all walks of life, but their empowerment will not be complete till they are inducted in politically powerful positions. This authority will enable a majority of women to contribute to the development of the nation,” she said. Ms. Swaraj also urged women councillors to fulfil their responsibilities at home as well as in the office by maintaining a fine balance between the two activities.

Member of Parliament Krishna Tirath congratulated the women councillors and said their “courage, bravery and prudence” were responsible for their election as representatives of the public. She appealed to them to fight social evils like dowry, female foeticide, rape and prostitution. Delhi Mayor Arti Mehra urged the women councillors to enhance their commitment to welfare of society. She advised them to bring credibility to what they spoke and work towards solving the problems of residents.

“One should be dedicated to completion of developmental works within the prescribed time, only then will there be progress,” she added.
