NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has pulled up the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for not submitting to it details of action taken against two assistant engineers and a “beldar” for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs.2.5 lakh from a resident for allowing him to add a storey to his house at Rajouri Garden in West Delhi. The addition was carried out three years ago allegedly in violation of the sanctioned building plan. A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice M. K. Sharma and Justice Rekha Sharma observed that suspension of the accused was not enough when counsel for the civic body submitted that they had been suspended. When the Bench enquired about the status of the criminal proceedings against the accused, counsel submitted that he needed time to find out. Then the Bench directed him to file a detailed report about the proceedings against them within three weeks. The Bench last year had summoned the then Municipal Commissioner A. K. Nigam to the court to explain why he had not taken any action so far against the accused. The matter had come to the Court after the “victim” moved a petition in 2006 seeking directions to the civic body not to demolish the extra floor of his house saying that he had paid Rs.2.5 lakh to the engineers and the “beldar” for the construction.
