Human chain: Students of the Social Work Department of D.G. Vaishnav College and school students forming a human chain on Marina Beach to create awareness of road safety. CHENNAI: A human chain to draw people’s attention towards road safety was a good strategy to make heads turn. Students and faculty of the Department of Social Work of D.G. Vaishnav College joined hands with school students and teachers to form a human chain near the Gandhi Statue on Marina Beach on Friday to create awareness of road safety among the public. The youngsters stood with placards and banners, crying out slogans. They also distributed pamphlets provided by the Chennai Police to passersby. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunil Kumar presided over the event. The programme was part of the students’ continued efforts to take on social issues and create awareness of them. The students previously dealt with issues ranging from alcoholism and suicide to protection of the environment. They work with the help of social workers and non-governmental organisations to fight social evils. Signature campaignOn Friday, they also collected signatures from those who attended the rally. This was an attempt that sought to bring about a change in road behaviour and increase safety.
