THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Law M. Vijayakumar has called for heightened vigilance against the re-emergence of diseases that are believed to have been eradicated. He was addressing a function got up at the Government Hospital, Peroorkada, here for the State-level inauguration of the National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP). The Minister said awareness constituted an important part of the strategy to tackle the outbreak of epidemics. He called for more involvement of the public in health campaigns. Mayor C. Jayan Babu presided over the function. State Leprosy Officer Sreerekha Panikker, Peroorkada ward councillor S.V. Padmakumar, Hospital Superintendent S. Rema Maheswari Thankachi and coordinator of the Integrated Leprosy Eradication Programme K.R. Prabhakaran Nair participated. Awards were distributed to students who won the slogan competition for the NLEP. A year-long campaign will be taken up in the State under the programme.
