NEW LOOK: Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R.Baalu at the Pazhaiya Tambaram Tank on Saturday. TAMBARAM: Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu on Saturday inaugurated the rejuvenated ‘pazhaya Tambaram’ Tank in West Tambaram. The tank, once a source of water for residents of some pockets of West Tambaram, was rendered unusable about two decades back. Over the past five to six years, with contributions from the constituency development funds of Mr. Baalu, MLAs, Tambaram Municipality and members of the Old Tambaram Village Residents Welfare Association, nearly Rs.50 lakh had been spent on rejuventating the tank. The Union Minister underscored the significance of safeguarding the environment. Later, at a function in Medavakkam, he commissioned streetlights installed on Velachery Main Road, at a total cost of Rs.1.5 crore. As he was on his way to the function venue in West Tambaram, a section of residents from Irumbuliyur gathered on the road. They included those who had recently received eviction notices from the State government for allegedly encroaching on land inside Irumbuliyur Lake. They handed over petitions to Mr. Baalu. After the Minister left the inauguration venue, the residents squatted on the road for 15 minutes from around 7.30 p.m., disrupting traffic on Mudichur Road. Senior police officials and elected representatives from Tambaram Municipality assured them that a grievance meeting would be held on Tuesday. Earlier, speaking at the function, Tambaram MLA S.R. Raja said following specific directions from the Madras High Court, it was proposed to evict encroachments from 19 lakes in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts.
