KOLKATA: Holder Mahindra United kept itself in the hunt for a semifinal berth beating local favourite East Bengal 2-0 in a Group ‘A’ league match of the 113th IFA Shield football tournament on Saturday. Mahindra completed its group assignment with three points (one win and one loss) and joined South Africa’s Santos FC, which also has three points. The group positions will be finalised after the latter plays East Bengal on Monday. Churchill Brothers (four points from two matches) brightened its chances of moving into the last-four stage after drawing goalless against Bangladesh’s Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting in a Group ‘B’ match at the Howrah Stadium. Mahindra scored through Mohammad Rafi (37th minute) and Yusif Yakubu (43rd). Later, Mohun Bagan rode on Brazilian Jose Barreto’s hat-trick to drub Mohammedan Sporting 3-0 in another Group ‘B’ match. Mohun Bagan got into the scoring act off the first move after kick-off. Barreto slotted home off a Ishfaq Ahmed pass. He scored again in the 11th and 18th minutes. — Principal Correspondent
