New Delhi: A court here on Saturday granted bail to an ABVP leader who was arrested for allegedly vandalising Delhi University property over “objectionable text” on “Ramayan” in syllabus. Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) R. Kiran Nath granted bail to Manvender Singh after he furnished a bail bond of Rs 15,000 and a surety of the like amount. “The accused, Manvender Singh, is granted bail and ordered to abide by the rules and regulations prescribed in law. In no way, he can resort to any kind of violence,” the ASJ said. However, the court rejected the bail application of another accused, Rakesh Kapoor, after it found that he was neither a student nor a member of the student’s union. Judicial custodyRaman, another ABVP leader arrested on Friday, was on Saturday remanded to judicial custody till March 14. ASJ H.S .Sharma had on Friday granted bail to former DUSU vice-president Vikas Dahiya after he furnished a bail bond of the same amount.
The police earlier told the court that the accused allegedly resorted to rioting in the History department on the campus during protests over “objectionable texts” with reference to Sita, Laxman and Hanuman in their syllabus. Several electronic equipment were damaged in the incident, the police said. The chargesAll the three accused are booked under Sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting with deadly weapons), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of his duties), 452 (house tresspass) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC. — PTI
