Surprise check: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan along with Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar reviewing the works of the new world class international terminal of Thiruvananthapuram international airport on the Chakka side on Saturday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Saturday made a surprise visit to the upcoming Rs.245.58-crore world class terminal complex of Thiruvananthapuram international airport on the Chakka side and reviewed the progress of the work.

The Chief Minister, who was accompanied by Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijakumar, Mayor C. Jayan Babu and V. Surendran Pillai, MLA, arrived at the project site around 12 noon after inaugurating the civil works of Air India’s Aircraft Engineering Maintenance Base. He was greeted by Airport Director N. Nagaraj and Director of Airports Authority of India (Projects) V.K. Malhotra. The headload workers, who assembled near the project site, greeted Mr. Achuthanandan with slogans. The workers engaged in fabrication work of the proposed terminal building and levelling of earth were surprised to see the Chief Minister.

After wearing a safety headgear provided by the project officials, the Chief Minister inspected the work of the three-storeyed terminal building. The fabrication work of the building facing the Parvathi Puthanar on the Chakka side is on. Mr. Nagraj told the Chief Minister that the entrance to the new terminal would be from the Chakka-Enchakkal stretch of NH Bypass.

The passengers would be able to save time as the entrance was close to the city and on the side of the bypass, he said. The Airport Director sought the attention of the Chief Minister that the work of the approach road to the terminal complex had not commenced. Mr. Vijayakumar said: “We will see that the works are expedited.”

The work on the Rs.165-crore first phase included the Rs.115-crore terminal building, apron and a car park, which could accommodate 575 cars.
