An unforgettable evening

When P. Jayachandran sang “Anuraga ganam pole…” on Saturday on the Kozhikode beach, thousands of music fans sat on the sands mesmerised; what if many among them were not even born when the song was originally recorded in 1967 for the film ‘Udyogastha.’

The song, written by Yusufali Kacheri and composed by M.S. Baburaj, is one of the classics from the golden age of Malayalam film music. “Anuraga ganam pole…” was indeed one of the highlights of the three-hour show, the main event of day two of the 12th Malabar Mahotsavam. Jayachandran, who began the programme with his immensely popular devotional song, “Vighneswara janma nalikeram…” (written by S. Ramesan Nair and composed by P.K. Kesavan Nambudiri), was such a delight to hear. He shared the stage with Jyotsna, a playback singer from the younger generation.

Jayachandran was in superb form while singing some of his more recent songs, like “Keranirakaladi…” (‘Jalolsavam’), “Swayamvara chandrike…” (‘Chronic Bachelor’) and “Kallayi kadavathe…” (‘Perumazhakalam’), too. All the songs he sung were another reminder that few could match this singer when it comes to the quality of the voice and ‘bhavam.’

Jyotsna was also able to entertain the big crowd, especially with songs like “Meharuba meharuba…” (‘Perumazhakalam’)and “Parthamuthal nale…” (‘Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu’), which she sang in tandem with Sunil Kumar. Sindhu Premkumar, Mufeeda and Roshni were the other singers of the night.
