Passenger train service sought
Staff Reporter
VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Railway season tickets holders’ welfare association has sought introduction of a passenger train service from Madurai to Tirunelveli or Tiruchendur in the afternoon.
In a memorandum submitted to Pattali Makkal Katchi founder, S. Ramadoss, last week, its president, I. Inbaraj, said that there was no train service to southern districts from Madurai for seven hours between 7.25 a.m. and 2.30 p.m.
Stating that pilgrims and tourists were visiting in large numbers to go to Madurai, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Tiruchendur, he said that the proposed train would benefit them.
The association also suggested operating the Dindigul-Madurai passenger train from Madurai at 8.40 a.m. to reach Kovilpatti at 10.40 a.m. for the benefit of students and office-goers. In the return direction it should start at Kovilpatti at 5 p.m. and reach Madurai at 7 p.m.
The memorandum urged the railways to allow season ticket holders to travel in the reserved compartments (S6, S7 and S8) in the Tuticorin-Mysore Express trains.
