District General Hospital goes eco-friendly

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: In a move that would help set an example for public institutions taking an eco-friendly step, the District General Hospital will have a new biogas plant on its premises that will generate enough electricity to light up the lamps in the garden. The new plant will be inaugurated on Monday by Minister for Local Self Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty.

The biogas plant has come up at a cost of Rs.4.5 lakh, entirely funded from the MLA fund of K.V. Thomas. The technical know-how for the 5-tonne plant has been imparted by Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, which also conducted training for the staff appointed for maintaining the plant.

The 847-bed hospital generates around 500 kg of biodegradable waste daily that will be processed in the plant to generate electricity. The hospital was already generating compost from waste. The process will also be formally inaugurated during the function at the GH premises at 10 a.m.

The Hospital Development Committee has appointed three staff exclusively for its maintenance. Besides, all the cleaning staff and the nursing staff would be given training for waste segregation.

The bio-degradable waste will be separated form the non-biodegradable waste collected from each ward itself. Awareness on segregation would be provided to the patients
