THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Fire Force Officers’ Association has urged the State government for executive authority and more powers to enforce fire safety regulations. Talking to presspersons here on Sunday, E.B. Prasad, president of the association, and K.P. Said Muhammed, general secretary, stressed the need to utilise the Fire and Rescue Services for prevention of disasters. They said the service could be equipped with powers to regulate the use of explosives and monitor the operational readiness of fire safety equipment, such as extinguishers and alarms, installed in buildings. The association said the absence of functional fire hydrants and other modern equipment, such as snorkels and turntable ladders, was hampering the preparedness of the Fire and Rescue Services in battling fire accidents in cities such as Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. “The 19th State conference of the association will be held here on Tuesday. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will inaugurate the conference.
