Sirsi: Uttara Kannada district should be developed as a prime tourist destination, Bharatiya Janata Party national general secretary H.N. Anantkumar has said. He was speaking at the inauguration of “Malenad Sobagu-Sonda Utsav” on the premises of Muttinakere Venkatramana temple, 20 km from here, on Saturday. Uttara Kannada had now become the cultural centre of the State, he said. Mr. Anantakumar said that if a project was prepared to boost cultural tourism with Sirsi and Sonda as the main centres, he would hold a meeting with Union Minister for Tourism Ambika Soni, along with the representatives from Sirsi. Canara MP Ananthkumar Hegde, who was the chief guest, said that the utsav was a “janotsav” (people’s festival) as it was organised without any grant from the State Government. Nadoja Award winner and folk singer Sukri Bomma Gowda, traditional medicine practitioner V.G. Hegde Kalkai, sandalwood artisan Manjunath Gudigar and Visnu Ramachandra Joishi Kumta were felicitated. Gangadharendra Sararswati, seer of Swarnalli Math and Battakalanka Bhattacharya Swamiji of Jain Math, Sonda, were among those present.
