Residents hand over land surrender forms

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Seventy-five families of Pizhala handed over surrender forms to District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish on Sunday; stating their willingness to surrender land for a road proposed by the Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA) to connect Kochi city with Paravur.

A function in this regard was held on Pizhala island. Minister for Fisheries and Registration S. Sarma was the chief guest. The 4.6-km long and 22-metre-wide road will take off from the four-lane road planned between Vallarpadam and Kalamassery.

It will pass through Mollampilly and the islands of Pizhala and Valiyakadamakudy, cross over to Chattanad and reach Paravur. The proposed nine-metre Pizhala-Puthussery Road will have a link to the new road. Sources in the GIDA said this road might later be linked to the ring road proposed by the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA).

To cost Rs.113 crore

Mr. Hanish, who is also the GIDA Secretary, said the project is estimated to cost Rs.113 crore. “Apart from three bridges and a smaller one, there will be 15 box culverts in the project. The road will provide a diagonal link from the city to Paravur. Very soon, the islands would become tourist destinations, especially so since the road will be a stone’s throw away from NH 17,” Mr. Hanish said.

The willingness to surrender land for the project is in the backdrop of the long-pending demand of the islanders to establish road connectivity with the city and the northern side, to Paravur. The GIDA is acquiring land at a width of 30 metres, though the road will have an initial width of 22 metres.

Sources in GCDA said the State Housing Board (the project consultant) has been asked to prepare a design and the estimate for the road project.
