Ponmudy. He was delivering the convocation address at Arcot Sri Mahalakshmi College for Women (ASMWC) and Arcot Sri Mahalakshmi College of Education on the premises of Arcot Sri Mahalakshmi Group of Educational Institutions in Vilapakkam near here on Sunday. Mr. Ponmudy said that an increase in the number of educational institutions and improvement in the quality of education constituted the motto of the Higher Education Department in this era when the students had to compete with the students in educationally advanced countries. Memorising multiplication tables, which was an essential aspect of mathematics education in the past, was not necessary these days in view of the emergence of the modern calculator and the availability of the calculator facility in cell phones. But, the school teachers, who got educated in the days when calculators were not in existence, were still insisting on memorising multiplication tables. Under these circumstances, modern teaching methodologies had to be imparted to the students of colleges of education and teacher training institutes to keep pace with the advancements in technology and to improve the quality of education. Mr. Ponmudy said that the teachers should change their mindset in the light of the modern developments in the teaching techniques. A psychological transformation among the teacher trainees and the school heads was necessary to bring about an improvement in the quality of education. There was no need to restrict the number of students in a classroom as some headmasters did, if audio-visual aids were employed in the classrooms, and the teachers resorted to the use of collar mikes, as in many modern schools and colleges. Besides, audio-visual aids would facilitate and quicken the learning process. Realising the need of modernisation in the teaching methodology, the State government had taken the initiative in allotting one month of the study in teacher training institutes and colleges of education to the imparting of modern teaching techniques, he said. Mr. Ponmudy distributed degree certificates to 707 candidates, comprising 507 from the ASMWC and 200 from Arcot Sri Mahalakshmi College of Education for Women. This included 22 university rank-holders. R. Gandhi, Ranipet MLA, presided. D.L. Balaji, Correspondent, Arcot Sri Mahalakshmi Group of Educational Institutions, welcomed the gathering. C. Hasthimal Surana, chairman of the college committee, P. Ramamoorthy, Dean, ASM institutions, K. Sukumaran, Principal, ASMW College of Education, and K.M. Laik Ali, Principal, ASMWC, spoke. K.R. Baskaran, secretary of the college committee, proposed vote of thanks.
